“On The Road” to Puerto Escondido with El Jaguar

“On the Road” to Puerto Escondido with El Jaguar

Puerto Escondido on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast has so much to offer so much that trying to list everything would end up being a Travel Guide Books for Tourists. So instead I have photographed the city from every which way including air (on Highway 200). I couldn’t find a ship that docked in Puerto Escondido coming from anywhere but fishing boats and launches did dock at the various beaches I photographed, all within 15 minutes by taxi, car or boat.

Let me tell you about the roads first, as most nearly ANYTHING you will read that was written before February 28th,  2011 will be wrong. From Oaxaca I traveled both ways. First I took highway 175 (196 miles) and returned on Highway 131 (167 miles), yet they both took 6 hours and 15 minutes. The choice here is Freeway with sporadic potholes (Highway 175) or potholes with sporadic freeways and newly paved highway (131). My guess is that Highway 175, when finished will save an hour off your trip. It is under massive construction, including Highway 200 that connects its terminus to Puerto Escondido and on to Acapulco.

Puerto Escondido’s Playa Zicatela is first and foremost a surfer’s paradise. Many people consider it the Third best surfing spot on Earth and First in Mexico. I wouldn’t question that and my photos show you why this is a fact.

By far, Highway 175 has more to offer. You go through Coyotepec, famous for its Black Pottery and Ocotlan, the home of the famous artist Rodolfo Morales, but also the home and workshop of pottery maker Guillermina Aguilar and family. But before we start the slideshow, there was one new thing that caught my eye as I traveled just past the outskirts of Oaxaca, a parking lot that said, in English, “Parking, no burros.” Now that’s progress in Oaxaca, where the First and Third worlds do not clash, but meld.

I spent ten days at the Flor de Maria Hotel and Restaurant (Resevations: 582 0536) on the Playa Marinero, conveniently located between the Playas Principal and Zicatela, a short walk to either. The food and service is great, pool, bar and terrace on the third floor, and a beautiful view.
