SHIRLEY GRAY’S ART (1941-2011)

La Aventura

Tropical Jazz at Casa ColonialShirley Gray was born in 1941 in Jasper, Arkansas. She grew up and went to school in Kansas City, Missouri. After completing one year of college she married and had two children. When her husband died very young, she returned to school part time, and worked to support her children at a variety of jobs over the years, including waitress, bartender, bookkeeper, pastel portrait artist, jazz singer, and others. After she finished college, and taught school for two years, before attending law school. She graduated law school at age 40, and practiced in Missouri and Texas as a litigator until retiring to Oaxaca, Mexico where she began painting 6 years ago.  She lives in Oaxaca with her husband, Charles Gray, a jazz musician.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Shirley Gray. She died at her home in Oaxaca on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

Shirley and her husband Charles Gray are longtime members of the Oaxaca Lending Library. Shirley had been the treasurer of the board of the Oaxaca Lending Library.  Until her death, she was the Treasurer of the Oaxaca Lending Library Foundation. Shirley was a voracious reader and an accomplished artist. Her painting of OLL’s”usual suspects” hangs in the café area of the library. As a member of the Foundation Board said, Shirley was the most diligent volunteer he had ever encountered in his life. Before retiring to Oaxaca, she practiced law in Texas.

She is survived by her husband Charles, her son Philip and Charles’ son Tony.
