SCHOOLS FOR CHIAPAS

Once again it’s time to celebrate an important anniversary of dignity, democracy, and justice. And once again it’s time for New Year’s resolutions.

Ya Basta! ~ “Enough is Enough” was the cry of thousands of Mayan farmers on Jan. 1, 1994. It was first day of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and it was the birth of a new people’s movement.

Today that moment continues to build schools, hospitals, and agro-ecology centers in Chiapas. Today that movement for dignity, democracy and justice spans the globe. Today that moment dreams in many languages and encompasses many causes. Today your support can provide nitty-gritty support directly to the Mayan communities in Chiapas – the birthplace of the Zapatistas.

Seven programs you can resolve to support TODAY, tomorrow, and whenever you are able:

1. School Constructions – during 2010 your support will fund construction of at least three new schools.

2. Fairer Trade Marketing – during 2010 your support will expand our inventory of Zapatista-made products for online sales.

3. Emergency Health Programs – during 2010 your support will save lives of Mayan peasants.

4. Service and Study Travel – during 2010 your support will create unique travel experiences throughout Chiapas, Mexico.

5. Mother Seeds in Resistance – during 2010 your support will buy field testing kits to identify GMO contaminations in Chiapas corn.

6. Trees: Neem, Fruit, and Reforestation – - during 2010 your support will plants trees in Chiapas.

7. Music and sports centers – – during 2010 your support will fund construction of two sports centers and the distribution of many musical instruments in Chiapas, Mexico.

Schools for Chiapas brings more that “brick-and-mortar” support to Chiapas, but 15 years later we are certainly still helping build schools and community centers in isolated Mayan communities throughout Chiapas. Schools for Chiapas remains a small, grass-roots organization driven by volunteer labor, but every year we work side-by-side with Zapatistas on projects chosen by community organizations. Finally, Schools for Chiapas supporters are generally not wealthy people, but year-after-year they donate what they can to support freedom loving education programs in Chiapas, Mexico.
